Intent:
Our geography curriculum is designed to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
Our philosophy is that children should:
- enable children to develop an excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like, both in Britain and the wider world.
- develop a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected.
- build an extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary.
- develop fluency in complex, geographical enquiry and the ability to apply questioning skills, as well as effective presentation techniques.
- enable children to be able to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment.
- foster a genuine interest in the subject and a real sense of curiosity about the world and the people who live here.
- be taught geography through a values-based approach where possible such as justice, equality for all.
- explore sustainability and Fairtrade through power and decision making at local, national and international levels.
Implementation:
Geography is taught throughout our Learning Experiences showing a progression of skills across the school. It is intertwined with other areas of the curriculum to inspire children’s curiosity and develop their skills and knowledge.
For each learning experience, a knowledge organizer which outlines knowledge (including vocabulary) is produced. All children will master and apply this knowledge through the learning experience.
Impact:
What we expect you to see:
- happy and engaged learners.
- discussions and questioning around different Geography topics using prior knowledge as they progress through the school.
- children who recognize beauty, order and complexity in the world.
- empathetic learners demonstrating positive attitudes towards others, recognizing their needs and challenges they face.
- subject specific vocabulary taught and displayed for reference.
